SERIOUS ATV INCIDENT ON CHRISTMAS MORNING
Friday, December 25
A woman has been flown to hospital with serious face and head injuries after an ATV crash North West of Hobart this morning.
Tasmania Police said the 37-year-old Sandy Bay woman riding the vehicle was inexperienced and not wearing a helmet a when she crashed.
The incident happened on a private property at Clifton Vale Road at Dysart.
Police said the woman lost control of the vehicle in a cherry orchard which overturned and ejected the rider from the vehicle.
She suffered “significant face and head injuries and a possible broken arm”, according to Tasmania Police.
Senior Constable Adam Hall said investigations indicated the woman was a first time ATV rider and was not wearing any safety equipment or a helmet.
The ATV was not fitted with any form of rollover protection system.
Police, Ambulance Tasmania and SES were all tasked to the scene including Crash Investigation and Forensic Services who believe inexperience is believed to be a contributing factor in the cause of the crash.
The use of alcohol or drugs is not suspected.
This is a timely reminder that ATV’s that are not fitted with any rollover protection are dangerous and only experienced operators should be riding them,” Senior Constable Hall said.
“The use of safety equipment and a helmet would also likely have reduced the severity of the injuries sustained by the rider.”

SERIOUS LONGFORD CRASH
Wednesday, December 23
A 20-year-old woman was flown to Hobart with critical head injuries following a single vehicle crash near Longford this afternoon.
The 25-year-old driver and his three-year-old son in the back seat escaped uninjured.
The white Peugeot hatch was travelling south on Pateena Rd, towards Longford, when it veered left onto the gravel shoulder of the road, then swerved right, crossing both lanes and hitting a tree just before 1pm.
It narrowly missed another car travelling in the opposite direction.
All occupants were from northern Tasmania.
The 20-year-old woman, the driver’s sister, was trapped in the car and needed to be cut free by emergency workers.
She was treated at the scene for critical head injuries before being flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital for further treatment.
Initial investigations suggest the driver may have suffered a medical episode just before the crash.
Tasmania Police Inspector Scott Flude said it was a timely reminder of the importance of staying safe on the roads heading into the Christmas period.
