BELOVED North Hobart watering hole the Waggon and Horses will close its doors at the end of the week.
The licensee of the Argyle St sports pub, which is renowned for its bar meals, has cited rising costs and changing customer habits as factors in the decision to cease trading.
The pub’s closure was announced in a post on social media.
“We’ve tried everything over the years however due to changes in customer demands I.e ordering more at home than ever before through Uber eats, more competition I.e (food trucks, micro breweries) ageing facilities, unknown future in relation to our lease and rising rates, water and gas we are unable to keep going,” the post said.
“We will sincerely miss the friends we’ve made along the way and appreciate all the support people have given to us over the years we have run the Waggon.
We would love to thank all the staff that have helped us and been with us throughout the years.”
The Waggon is a popular venue with sports fans who traditionally flock to the pub for major events such as the AFL grand final.
During peak popularity the pub’s kitchen was churning out 4000 meals a week.
The licensee has been contacted for comment.
