WITH the bouldering sport booming and gripping the nation, a new Hobart gym has been highly anticipated in the southern Tasmania climbing community.
Rock It Derwent Park is an offshoot from its centre in the city, with the space purely dedicated to bouldering, with a hangout cafe and bar to boot.
“It’s gotten to the point where I can’t even describe it because we’ve been waiting so long for this,” co-owner Roxy Perry said.
“We’re just so ready to open the doors, I’m just so excited.”
Bouldering is developing fast across Australia with centres popping up all over.
Ms Perry said locals were hungry for their own gym.
“It’s just more or less lacking in Tassie and in Hobart. What we had to offer in the city, we literally outgrew our walls,” she laughed.
The new space at Derwent Park is about five times bigger than the bouldering area at Hobart Rock It and comes with a light up climbing and training kilter board.
The city’s centre is more geared towards families so Ms Perry said they wanted to build a space that the adult community could come and enjoy. She said there was no need to learn how to tie ropes.
“It’s just get on the wall and have some fun. It’s just something that everyone can get around,” Ms Perry said.
The new bouldering gym — at 4-6 Elmsleigh Rd, Derwent Park — is due to open in April.
