Police have their sights set on a potential suspect involved in an assault at a Moonah grocery store – the second violent incident in the suburb in a fortnight.
Police including forensics, crime scene examiners and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch were called to an assault at Woolworths in Moonah just after 5pm on Wednesday.
A 30-year-old man with a head injury was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he remains.
A second adult man left the scene before police arrived.
Speaking to media on Thursday, Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby said police had checked a “number” of addresses, and they were “confident” they would soon speak to that man in the coming hours or days.
“That male is yet to be formally identified, and an investigation is ongoing,” Det Insp Morrisby said.
“We’ve got a very specific line we’re following; we believe we know the identity of that person (but) we’ve not formally spoken to that person yet.”
No weapons were involved in the incident.
The assault forced staff to close the store from 6pm onwards while police investigated the scene – with Det Insp Morrisby thanking staff and shoppers for their co-operation.
He said the men were believed to be known to each other, and this was not a “random attack”.
While the full extent of the man’s injuries are unknown, they are not believed to be life-threatening.
This incident is the second act of violence in Moonah in less than a fortnight.
Det Insp Morrisby said police would continue to disrupt anti-social behaviour, but reassured residents that people would be held accountable for their actions.
