UPDATED: TWO drivers were taken to hospital in a critical condition after a head-on crash on the Arthur Highway in southern Tasmania.

The crash happened at Forcett shortly after 10.45am yesterday, leaving one vehicle upturned with its male driver trapped inside.

Initial police investigations indicated a black Holden Commodore travelling north towards Sorell and a silver Toyota Yaris travelling in the opposite direction collided.

Acting Sergeant David Shead said both drivers were alone in their vehicles and were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The injured motorist in the Holden was identified by police as a 29-year-old man from Primrose Sands, while the driver of the Toyota has been identified as a 39-year-old male from interstate.

Police said the Toyota driver’s condition improved last night and was later marked as in a stable condition. As of last night, the Holden driver remained in a critical state.

Both of the vehicles ended up in a ditch at the side of the road, with one of the cars resting on its side.

Police said road conditions were dry at the time of the crash, with drugs or alcohol not believed to be a factor.

Sgt Shead said the accident forced the Arthur Highway to close until late yesterday afternoon.

He said the upcoming Easter Holiday period was a timely reminder to motorists to drive with caution.

“We need to stay safe on our roads,” he said. “We need to make sure we don’t drive tired. It only takes a split second for a tragedy to occur.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated and police would like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles involved prior to the crash.
