It’s been criticised for not taking safety seriously enough, and for showing a woman pilot in a swimsuit, but a new Qantas safety video has been welcomed by the owner of a Tasmanian island featured in it.

Qantas’ new destination-driven in-flight safety video shows pilots, cabin and ground crew speaking about safety procedures from some of their favourite locations.

One of four Australian destinations featured is Tasmania’s Picnic Island.

Picnic Island owner Clem Newton-Brown – who has the island on the market – said the ad was fantastic recognition for the region.

“It’s very exciting the East Coast and the Freycinet region in particular has been recognised in the movie that’s going to be shown to hundreds of thousands of people a year,” he said.

“We are very pleased they asked us to be part of it. We do offer a very unique experience.

“An experience on a Tasmanian island is very different to an experience on a tropical Queensland island.”

Mr Newton-Brown did not buy into the controversy around the video.

“My view is the movie is very watchable and it’s fantastic to see so many different places around the world featured, I certainly sat through the whole 10 minutes of it … And that is the point I believe, to have a safety video that people will actually watch,” he said.

Picnic Island is for sale for offers around $3.5m.

Mr Newton-Brown said he was considering offers from “a number of parties”.

“Most people who are looking at it are looking to develop a tourism experience and a private retreat as well. I’m hoping it will still be available for visitors to come and stay,” he said.
