Tasmanian actor Essie Davis is set to return to the screen, with a string of high-profile television projects in the pipeline for 2024 and beyond.
Davis stars in the new 14-episode Netflix series One Day, due for release on February 8.
The British series – which Hobart-based Davis filmed in Edinburgh, London and Rome – is an adaptation of the best-selling David Nicholls novel of the same name.
It follows the story of students Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) who meet on university graduation night – July 15, 1988 – then go their separate ways.
The series spans 20 years and each episode finds the characters another year older on this particular date as they grow and change and experience joy and heartbreak.
Davis plays the mother of Dexter.
Davis said the project was “lovely” to work on with “delightful people, really wonderful scripts and an exceptional cast” and she expects the contemporary love story will appeal to a wide audience.
“It’s very bingeworthy,’’ she said.
“I’m very proud to be a part of it.’’
It’s just one of many projects Davis has been busily working on.
She is currently in Sydney filming an adaptation of The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a novel by Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan, with the Prime Video drama series directed by Davis’s husband Justin Kurzel.
Davis will soon return to Thailand to continue shooting TV series Alien, based on the Alien film franchise, with Ridley Scott as executive producer.
Other projects starring Davis, which are likely to be released this year, include Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar – inspired by the story of disgraced social media influencer Belle Gibson – and new Australian mystery/thriller series Exposure, due for release on Stan.
