Paul Kelly fans in Launceston and Devonport will get the chance to see the Australian singer songwriter without driving south, after new shows were announced on Thursday.
Mr Kelly was scheduled to play two shows at Odeon Theatre, but has added three more after his Melbourne and Sydney show were rescheduled due to coronavirus restrictions.
Extra performances have been added at Odeon Theatre on Sunday, Launceston’s Albert Hall on Tuesday and the Paranaple Arts Centre in Devonport on Wednesday.
Shows on Friday and Saturday at Odeon Theatre are sold out.
Earlier: Lockdowns have spelled the end for big name musicians on national tours, but beloved balladeer Paul Kelly has leveraged the opportunity to bring more shows to Tassie next week in the absence of his Victorian and NSW stints.
“We need to keep the band and crew on the road and keep playing wherever we can,” Kelly said.
The multi-ARIA award winner’s two On the Road regional tour shows at Hobart this weekend have been boosted with a third Odeon Theatre performance this Sunday, plus two shows at Albert Hall, Launceston on Tuesday and Town Hall Theatre parnaple arts centre, Devonport on Wednesday.
Kelly’s “good, long show” will feature harmonies from gutsy singers Vika and LindaBull, “intimate and atmospheric” ballads and “upbeat” hits old and new.
Kelly said the unpredictable circumstances around the tour created a feeling of adventure.
“We’re really loving it, everyone’s in great spirits,” Kelly said.
“Last year was tough for us based in Melbourne, we couldn’t even cross town to play with each other.”
Kelly hoped to head up kunanyi/Mt Wellington or “get out on the river” during his visit.
Beyond the tour, Kelly looked forward to releasing a Christmas song double album in November featuring artistslike Kate Miller-Heidke and Marlon Williams.
“We’ve been stockpiling them, I’ve got a fondness for Christmas songs,” he said
And of course, Kelly’s adored hit How to make Gravy has been re-recorded for the album alongside “hymns, carols” and “earthy” and “secular” tunes.
