THE removal of carparking along the popular restaurant strip in Elizabeth St is one of many ideas in the mix as part of a council review of North Hobart.

Hobart City Council is developing a plan for better public amenity, access and parking on and near the Elizabeth St retail and restaurant strip in North Hobart.

Earlier this year, traders and residents were invited to share their views and ideas on public transport, taxi and ride-share services, food delivery services, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and on-street and off-street carparking, with a focus on the Condell Place carpark.

The report said what residents, visitors and traders loved about North Hobart was the variety and quality of independent cafes, eateries, bars and shops, cultural festivals and events, entertainment, especially live music venues and the State Cinema, its vibrancy and its heritage and streetscape character.

The main areas of concern raised were around carparking, unsafe pedestrian and cycling environment, traffic congestion, lack of convenience offerings, especially fresh food and bus services.

Specific suggestions put forward by the community for the Condell Place Car Park included making it a permanent event space, a flexible, multi-use community place, a dedicated green space, possibly including a community garden, a mixed use development, or an underground or multistorey carpark.

During stakeholder interviews representatives from both the RACT and Department of State Growth suggested exploring the removal of carparking on Elizabeth St.

North Hobart Residents and Community Association member Jenny Smith said the group was happy to see another step forward in the process towards making improvements in the suburb.

“The report itself is part of a series being done by the consultants for council, so we’re looking forward to further information including the consultant’s specific recommendations off the back of this report,” she said.

Group member Veronica McShane said the association was keen to continue staying engaged throughout the process.

“We’ve asked council for time to consider all the documents as they become available because the community needs time given it’s been difficult to meet during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

“People are stressed and will need more time to consider things, so we’re asking council not to rush this.”

The outcomes from the engagement report as well as the consultants’ other work, which will have specific recommendations, are currently being finalised and will be presented to elected members in mid-June.
