Multimillion-dollar Burnie court complex moves step closer as key plans approved
A major milestone has been reached for Burnie's new justice precinct as council gives the green light to build modern courts next to the town’s police station.
A court complex being built to replace Burnie’s 1970s era Supreme and Magistrates court has taken a step forward as the Burnie City Council approves the development application.
The new courts will be located at 100–106 Wilson Street and demolition and enabling works are currently underway at the site being completed by Tasmanian firm, Batchelor Construction Group.
The complex is designed to improve access to the justice system for those in the North West and replace the “outdated” facilities at 38 Alexander Street, Burnie.
Attorney-General Guy Barnett said the development application approval was an exciting milestone for the project with the new site “ideally located”.
“The Wilson Street site is ideally located on a corner block adjacent to the Burnie Police Station and is in close proximity to client-related services, which will support improved court operations and security,” Mr Barnett said.
He said the project would help revitalise the Burnie CBD with local businesses to benefit from increased trade both during construction and ongoing operations.
“Enabling works are well progressed at the site to ensure its ready for construction early next year, and I look forward to updating Tasmanians as this significant project continues to make progress over the coming months.”
Subject to final approvals, construction of the new $86.5M complex is expected to begin in early 2026 and be complete by 2027.
