Amyl and the Sniffers bassist and Tasmanian Gus Romer sweeps major ARIA Awards

Melbourne punk band Amyl and the Sniffers dominated at the ARIA awards last night, and Tassie’s own connection to the band got his chance to shine onstage.

If you frequented the Brisbane Hotel in the 2010s you likely would have seen Gus Romer cutting his teeth as a drummer in multiple Hobart punk bands.

Last night, through the band Amyl and the Sniffers, bassist Romer took home four of the six ARIAS the band was nominated for.

The Melbourne punk outfit took home Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Rock Album, and Best Cover Art.

Romer even took along his Mum, Helen Foster, to the 39th awards celebrating the best in Australian music.

“And, thanks to my mum,” Romer said during the band’s speech after receiving Best Rock Album.

Amyl and the Sniffers have taken the globe by storm with their Australian larrikin punk rock, they most recently made headlines for shouting $35,000 over the bar at multiple Melbourne venues after their free show at Federation Square was cancelled at the last minute.

Romer moved to Melbourne to join the band in 2017.

When accepting the award for Album of the Year, front woman Amy Taylor continued her reputation for being politically outspoken.

“As the new prime minister of Australia I would like to say all immigrants welcome,” she said.

“I’d like to say land back, the dole’s going up, and every pub gets a million dollars!”

The group were also nominated for Best Video and Best Australian Live Act.
