Hobart’s newest hi-tech road opens at Mac Point
Right now it’s the no-name road to nowhere, but soon it will be the main street of the Macquarie Point redevelopment.

THE first piece of permanent infrastructure at Macquarie Point has been unveiled as the gateway to the future development of the site.
The $4.4 million unnamed stretch of roadway, called the Northern Vehicular Access project, will serve as access to the first part of the site to be developed: the Escarpment.
The hi-tech tarmac cul-de-sac sits on top of an impressive array of infrastructure: natural gas, high speed broadband, stormwater, sewer, high and low voltage power and water to support future site development.
Macquarie Point Redevelopment Corporation CEO Mary Massina said after a lot of work, the physical transformation of the site was underway.
“This site is moving ahead in leaps and bounds — 2021 is going to be a fantastic year in terms of work, consultation with the community around the design for the park, as well as some really serious physical work being undertaken,” she said.
“We’re happy to report the passage of two highly-credentialed proponents going into the request for proposals process.
“We’re really aiming for an announcement mid next year with construction occurring either later that year or early next.”
Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson said it was exciting to see rapid progress at Macquarie Point.
“We’re very grateful to the local community for being so patient with us while we work through all of the planning issues and the tenure issues,” he said.
“So this is really now being prepared for market as we get to land sales next year and we start to see building taking place here and of course, in the fullness of times will public recreation open space.
The new road is open only to cyclists and pedestrians at present.
The Macquarie Point Development Corporation was established in 2013 with a government grant of $50 million.
At various times slated as a site for a new Hobart hospital, a sports stadium and a truth and reconciliation park, Macquarie Point is governed by a masterplan which includes 50 per cent of the site being devoted to public space.
The sewerage plant on part of the site is expected to be removed in 2023.
