MACQUARIE Point is “coming to life” with the imminent release of 9,000 square metres of land for mixed-use development.
The Escarpment, immediately behind the Cenotaph will be the first parcel of land to be sold at the site and will open for expressions of interest for an eight-week period from Thursday.
The expressions of interest were preceded by a pre-registration of interest process and will be followed by a request for proposals.
Construction on the site is expected to begin in 2022, ahead of the removal of the waste water treatment plan the following year.
As heavy machinery continued remediation works at the site, Minister for State Growth Michael Ferguson said he was pleased progress was being made.
“This site is coming to life and we’re really excited about it,” he said.
“We’ve travelled a long distance in a short amount of time in the last two years to get to this stage.
“We’ve done the master planning, we’ve done the zoning, we’ve done the corridor access to link it through to the northern transit corridor, we’re doing the remediation, we’re on track to complete 80 per cent of remediation this calendar year and to my right is the escarpment, which is now fully remediated and ready to go to market.”
At various times slated as a site for a new Hobart Hospital, a sports stadium and a truth and reconciliation park, Macquarie Point is governed by a masterplan which includes 50 per cent of the site being devoted to public space.
MPDC CEO Mary Massina said the wheels were turning on the site’s redevelopment.
“This is an exciting next step in Macquarie Point coming to life. We are now standing in the midst of The Escarpment,” she said.
“Just imagine behind you … a site coming to life with a mixture of uses from residential, visitor accommodation cafes, bars, restaurants, art galleries.”
Ms Massina said the MPDC had received an “impressive number” of pre-registrations of interest from international, national and local developers.
The Macquarie Point Development Corporation was established in 2013 with a government grant of $50 million.
