FRAGRANCE Group’s four-star, 55-metre tall hotel proposal at Collins St has been labelled “a sick joke” and a “tacky eyesore” by objectors ahead of a council decision on Monday night.
More than 1400 submissions have been made to Hobart City Council on the proposal, with only three in support.
Council planning officers have recommended the proposal be refused as it fails a number of key criteria of the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme including heights.

Under the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme 1997 the complying height limit is 15m but the council has discretion to approve heights in excess.
According to council documents, the hotel received a scathing critique from the community.
“The building would be an unwelcome landmark (and is) potentially the most hideous development ever submitted for a DA in Hobart,” one representer wrote.
Another called it an insult and a sick joke.

The developer scaled back the height of its hotel from 95m to 75m, then later to 55m.
Fragrance Group has argued that the revised height was more congruent with its neighbourhood and was similar to a number of other existing and approved buildings in the vicinity.
