A Glenorchy Council candidate has been targeted with racist graffiti telling her to “f... off where you come from” and calling her horrific racial slurs.

Mala Crew said ever since week one of the election her corflutes have been stolen, vandalised, and kicked to pieces.

Many of the graffiti contain racist abuse calling her “stinky curry”, even though Ms Crew was brought up in London and describes herself as “very English”.

Ms Crew’s mother’s family is from Mauritius and her father’s family is from South Africa, where she was born.

The local lawyer said the corflutes outside Charlie’s Takeaway were regularly kicked in, as were the ones near her personal address.

In addition to the ones which were destroyed and vandalised, Ms Crew said about nine have gone missing altogether.

“It started happening from the first week,” Ms Crew said.

“Almost every weekend and about twice a week they are kicked up and then we put it up again. I’m just sick of it.”

The racist attacks mirror those against Hobart City Councillor Zelinda Sherlock, who has been on the receiving end of vandalism and online racist abuse.

While campaigning for the 2018 state election she was told “we don’t want foreigners” and that she was part of an “Islamic invasion”.

In this year’s local government elections she received anonymous text messages saying “I identify as an Indian slave owner”.

Dr Sherlock said racist taunts were an unfortunate reality for certain political candidates who put themselves in the public eye.

“Racism as part of somebody’s denigration of a human being seems to be something that has most certainly been relevant and visible in this campaign period,” Dr Sherlock said.

“To me, racism demonstrates one of the lowest forms of intelligence. It seeks to degrade a person based on something they have no control of.”
