Meet eight-year-old Evie Smith, one of the stars of the new Powered by Tasmania campaign.
The two-minute trailer retraces the steps of Tasmania’s renewable electricity story, starting with the early pioneers’ first steps into the wilderness and recreates the construction of the state’s first hydro electricity power station and dam.
It then moves into the anti-dam protests and the fight for the Franklin River, before reverting to the present day.
That’s where Evie makes her first foray into acting and film as the daughter of a man driving an electric vehicle.
She’s shown in the back seat while her on-screen father drives through Tasmania’s rugged landscape before stopping on the edge of the ocean.
There they exit the car and sit looking out over the sea, with wind turbines in the background.
Evie’s mum Madelene Smith said she was proud of her daughter’s role in the advertising campaign.
“It’s an important thing to do, renewable energy is the future for sure,” Ms Smith said.
Evie got her break after Madelene signed her up to a local talent agency.
From there they got the call to audition and Evie was selected for the role.
“It was two days filming on the North Coast near Smithton. Evie loved the experience,” Ms Smith said, adding it was more of a hobby than a career choice for her daughter.
The Brand Tasmania campaign is part of a push to inform Tasmanians that more needs to be done in the renewable energy sector.
“Right now we’re years ahead, but unless we’re bold, others will catch up,” the trailer warns.
“It’s one of the most important moments and one of the biggest opportunities in our history.
“Tasmania needs more renewable electricity. And in the thousands of ways to electrify our lives and remove emissions, we can make Tasmania an even better place – community by community,” the advertisement continues.”
