Hobart has topped the list for the 10 most dangerous roads in the state, with seven streets in the area judged to be the worst for Tasmanian road users.

From highways to suburban streets, RACT has listed the most common places for single or multiple car accidents based on claims data over the past five years, with Tassie’s major towns a hub for serious accidents.

RACT advocacy and government relations general manager Mel Percival said sharing road data to improve understanding of serious accidents is critical to preventing deaths and serious crashes on Tasmanian roads.

“The RACT was very pleased to see that our campaign advocating for better, consistent, and transparent data with other automobile clubs and other key groups (such as the AMA) has been successful with the Federal Government’s commitment requesting all states and territories share data on accidents,” Ms Percival said.

“Sharing and increasing our understanding of data will allow us to pinpoint road safety issues and their root causes, measure the impact of policy changes and replicate successful interventions. It will also guide prioritisation of infrastructure funding.”

Data from the Department of State Growth shows a downward trend on serious injury and fatal crashes for the year until May 1 remaining below last year’s records.

Only eight fatalities have been recorded in Tasmania this year, with 11 deaths occurring at the same time last year.

Serious injury crashes dropped by 15 per cent, falling from last year’s total of 134 in the period until late April to 113 this year.
