Tasmania’s list of dropped bus trips continues to grow longer each day, with Metro flagging a whopping 247 cancellations for Friday.
It comes after Metro announced 107 dropped services on Thursday amid a shortage of drivers combined with a high number of absences.
Launceston saw 115 services called off, 62 inbound and 53 outbound from the city.
On Friday morning Metro flagged 23 cancelled trips for Hobart, but revised that number to 132 later in the day.
Rolling updates are being updated on the Metro Tasmania Facebook page, which has issued a profuse apology for the cancellations.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and the entire Metro team are working their hardest to minimise any further disruptions,” they said.
Rail, Tram and Bus Union Tasmanian Secretary Ric Bean said all these dropped trips made a compelling case for better Metro funding.
Mr Bean said the onus was on the state government to solve the bus driver shortage to ensure that buses actually showed up.
“A free bus is not much use if it doesn’t turn up,” Mr Bean said.
“The buck stops with the State Government. It needs to make sure Metro is properly staffed, properly resourced and properly managed.”
Friday marks day five of the state government’s five week free bus trip program.
