Dr Emma Carmichael is the best doctor in all of Tasmania, as voted by readers of The Mercury.
Dr Carmichael works as a general practitioner at Battery Point Medical clinic, where she is renowned for her ability to put people at ease and truly listen to her patients’ needs.
“A big part of the job is about reassuring people, making a safe space, and building trust over time,” Dr Carmichael said.
“That’s what being a GP is all about.”
Entering the medical profession has been a dream of hers since she was a precocious little girl.
She managed to skip a grade and enter medical school at the age of 16, finding herself surrounded by much older peers.
She graduated from medical school and got her first gig in country South Australia in 1999, before moving to Tasmania in 2000 where she has stayed ever since.
During those 21 years she worked all over Hobart, including at Northgate in Glenorchy, the Barrack Street Practice, and her current role at Battery Point Medical.
Looking back, she said she was proud to follow in her family’s footsteps, particularly her mum who was a nurse and her grandfather who was a GP.
“My grandfather would have been well chuffed with this result.”
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for voting. I think there’s a lot of great GPs in Tasmania and I feel grateful for everyone that voted for their GP.”
