Major plans for a social housing apartment complex in North Hobart were unanimously approved by the Hobart City Council on Monday.
The development application was for 29 apartments across three buildings at 71A Letitia Street.
The designs include a communal area with a barbecue, tables and seating and each apartment would have a private balcony space.
The development also includes 22 car spaces and 12 bicycle spaces.
The site is located next to the former Hobart Matriculation College, which is now home to two funeral homes.
It backs onto the Brooker Ave but would not be accessible from the highway.
The development is jointly funded by the state government and Centacare Evolve Housing, which would manage the units for 30 years.
In the application, a CEH spokesperson said there was considerable pressure to access social housing in North Hobart and the wider area.
They said increasing property price and rental market stress meant social housing tenants were no longer able to continue living in the area.
The apartment complex is expected to be complete by the end of December next year at the latest.
