A proposed social housing development in North Hobart could provide homes to those who have been priced out of the area.
A development application for 29 social housing units at 71A Letitia Street has been lodged with the Hobart City Council.
The units would be built across three buildings, the first a two storey building fronting Letitia St, a four storey building adjacent to the southern side building and three storey building adjacent to the site’s northern boundary.
The first building will comprise of three apartments, each with one bedroom.
Building two would have eight apartments with one bedroom each and eight apartments with two bedrooms each.
The third building would have 10 apartments, each with one bedroom.
The designs include a communal area with a barbecue, tables and seating and each apartment would have a private balcony space.
The development also includes 22 car spaces and 12 bicycle spaces.
The site backs onto the Brooker Ave but would not be accessible from the highway.
It’s located next to the former Hobart Matriculation College, which is now home to two funeral homes.
The development is jointly funded by the state government and Centacare Evolve Housing, which would manage the units for 30 years.
“North Hobart and the wider area have seen considerable pressure on access to social housing,” CEH said in a letter of explanation included in the application.
“Increasing property prices and rental market stress has meant people are no longer able to
continue to live in the local area.
“The proposed Letitia Street development looks to create a specific accommodation option
and long-term housing solution for social housing recipients.”
The units would be aimed at young individual and young couples, single middle aged or older people and small families with one child.
CEH would provide a range of community support programs.
