Car set on fire, Glenorchy

11am, Tuesday March 22

A gang of young hoons took a car on a joyride, crashed on the side of a Glenorchy road, and set the vehicle on fire, firefighters say.

One nearby resident heard an almighty bang and rushed outside to see several young men in their 20s piling out of the wrecked car on the intersection of Devines Road and Cochrane Street.

The resident said he saw them remove the licence plates before setting fire to the white Hyundai hatchback and fleeing on foot.

His account was corroborated by station officer Aaron Blizzard, who was called to the scene at around 10.45am.

Mr Blizzard said the car was fully engulfed by the time they arrived, but they managed to extinguish the flames within 15 minutes.

“Some youths were seen to have crashed the vehicle, got out of it, took the plates off it, and set it alight,” Mr Blizzard said.

“It makes it hard to identify where the car’s come from and whether it’s been stolen. It’s up to the police to determine that now.”

Investigations are ongoing.
