Tim Paine’s focus is now on packing school lunch boxes, rather than his cricket whites, and wife Bonnie Paine couldn’t be happier.
The former Australian Test captain retired from first-class cricket on Friday hailed a legend, an inspiration and one of the finest glovesmen in the game.
Ms Paine is relishing the prospect of him being at home more – though he spent the weekend playing for University in the Premier League.
“It’s going to be weird having another parent around, and so much less pressure for me,” she said.
“He’ll be doing lots of school pick-ups and drop offs and packing the lunch boxes.
“I’m excited to have quality family time.”
The couple’s daughter Milla, 5, is in prep and four-year-old son Charlie has just started kindergarten.
Asked if she was emotional when he walked through a guard of honour as he bid farewell at Bellerive Oval she said: “No, it was such a relief.”
“It’s been such a high pressured job and it rubs off on the family.
“I breathed a sigh of relief.
“Tim’s 38, it was nice it came to a good end and after playing for 23 years it’s time for the next chapter.”
There was an outpouring of love and support on Instagram where she posted a family photo with the caption “That’s a wrap!! Proud of you, legend.”
The post received more than 9000 likes and nearly 250 comments.
“He’s old and sore. It’s his time”, Ms Paine responded to one comment asking why Paine had retired.
She said she had a list of things “a mile long” for him to complete.
“He played for University at the weekend so he’s retired, but not really,” Ms Paine laughed.
“There’s a high chance he’ll continue playing because he loves it so much.”
Paine will play in the grand final next weekend.
