Tasmanian dairy producer, Ashgrove, has launched an Australian-first “climate-friendly” milk, made possible by an innovative feed supplement given to its cows.

The Ashgrove Eco-Milk is now available at Woolworths and IGA stores across Tasmania and is the product of a collaboration between Ashgrove and the Triabunna-based Sea Forest, which produces its SeaFeed supplement using native asparagopsis seaweed.

The supplement interacts with enzymes in cows’ digestive systems and can potentially halve the amount of methane emitted when they burp.

Ashgrove managing director Richard Bennett said the new milk kept the same taste as the company’s standard full-cream option but significantly reduced the environmental impacts from the production process, boasting up to 25 per cent less methane emissions.

“We are proud to lead the way with this Tasmanian solution to a global challenge,” he said.

“This offers a simple way for people to help reduce carbon emissions and is a lot cheaper than buying a Tesla.”

Ashgrove has set an initial goal of reducing methane emissions from its milk production by 30 per cent.

The packaging for its Eco-Milk is also environmentally friendly, made from 100 per cent recyclable materials.

Sea Forest founder and CEO Sam Elsom said the collaboration demonstrated “our commitment to meaningful climate impact and sustainable farming practices”.

“SeaFeed offers a solution to one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture,” he said.

The 2022 Tasmanian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report showed that agriculture accounted for 34 per cent of the state’s total emissions but SeaForest’s approach to the problem could potentially reduce the dairy industry’s greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 30 per cent
