Tasmanian seaweed cultivation business, Sea Forest, has been named one of the planet’s most innovative companies.

Founded by Sam Elsom, the business has operations at Triabunna and Swansea and cultivates the native red Australian seaweed asparagopsis to create a feed supplement – called SeaFeed – for cattle and sheep.

The supplement is designed to reduce the methane emissions each animal produces by up to 90 per cent.

New York-based media brand, Fast Company, last week named Sea Forest in its prestigious list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024.

“Our list of the Most Innovative Companies is both a comprehensive look at the innovation economy and a snapshot of the business trends that defined the year,” Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan said.

“We saw extraordinary innovation across the board in 2023, but we also saw a handful of clear patterns: the growing footprint and impact of AI, the triumphant return of live events, and great leaps forward in climate tech.

“We face daunting challenges on many fronts, but the solutions we celebrate in MIC give me plenty of hope about the future.”

Mr Elsom said Sea Forest was “proud” to be included in the list.

“This recognition from Fast Company underscores the potential of Australian scientific advancements and innovation in agriculture to contribute to global methane mitigation efforts,” he said.

“Through collaboration with our international customers and partners, we are committed to developing and implementing effective solutions that benefit the planet as a whole.”

Fast Company will host its Most Innovative Companies Summit and Gala in New York on May 16.
