Some 50 properties, including 15 businesses, have been affected by a burst water main on North Hobart’s busy Elizabeth St restaurant strip, a TasWater spokeswoman has said.
Cafe customers, restaurant diners, drivers and locals out for a stroll were going about their day on Friday when the incident saw the road quickly covered with a brown, flowing mass of water around 2.30pm.
A TasWater spokeswoman said the burst pipe resulted in a service interruption to North Hobart properties on Elizabeth St, Pitt St, Burnett St and surrounds.
“We are unsure of the damage that could have been caused to businesses at this stage, but we do understand the majority of the water is just going onto the road,” the spokeswoman said.
“We have a team on-site checking in with businesses this afternoon.”
The spokeswoman encouraged road users and pedestrians to avoid the area while repairs were ongoing.
“We do have traffic management on site to mitigate any risks to the public and our crews while they resolve the issue,” she said.
“Pedestrians have been blocked from entering the area while the repairs are being carried out which mitigates risks to them.
“Once the issue has been resolved TasWater crews (will) reinstate the area and ensure it is safe before the public can access the area.”
Any business affected by the incident is urged to call TasWater on 13 6992 to resolve issues.

JILLIAN Mundy was sitting with other hairdresser customers getting her hair dyed when she saw water gushing down the popular North Hobart restaurant strip.
She said some time after 2pm the flooding started, and nearly an hour later it was taking over the street.
“The whole street is flooded but the traffic’s still moving through it,” she said.
“TasWater hasn’t got here yet but I think they should soon.”
Ms Mundy the heavy flow of brown water appeared to be emanating from near Shingeki Yakiniku Charcoal BBQ restaurant.
“Elizabeth St does look like a bit of a river, a shallow one,” she said.
“We’re very excited in the hairdressers – we were worried they’d turn the water off and we wouldn’t be able to get dye out of our hair.”
