Police have released images of a vehicle they believe was involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Adelaide’s northern suburbs and have urged the driver to come forward.

Emergency services were called to North East Rd, Hillcrest, at 11pm on Tuesday after a 20-year-old Greenacres woman was struck by a car, which police believe to be a silver sedan.

The young woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Major Crash investigators spoke to witnesses who described seeing a silver sedan involved in the crash, but it allegedly did not stop at the scene.

The crash occurred on the northeast bound carriageway of North East Rd, near Forbes St, near the service station.

CCTV from the scene shows the victim with dark hair and wearing dark clothes walking into the middle of North East Rd at 10.56pm.

She knelt down between the Windsor Hotel and the Hillcrest OTR.

For about three minutes, the woman was seated in the road, standing for a brief moment, before once again sitting back down mere seconds before she was hit.

Some cars veered from the right lane to avoid the young woman.

At 11pm she was hit by a silver sedan who failed to break or stop.

Other drivers stopped to help, and police were on the scene shortly after and diverted traffic around the scene.

Police are urging the driver of the car to come forward and are appealing for any witnesses or other motorists with dashcam footage, including of the woman’s presence on the roadway before the fatal crash, to contact police.

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told ABC radio Adelaide police patrols were on the scene quickly and had a stern plea to the driver of the vehicle.

“Police were in the general area and came across the accident scene just after it happened,” he said.

“Notwithstanding that and the paramedics arriving, there was nothing that could be done.

“If anyone knows the identity of the diver of the vehicle, I strongly encourage them to come forward … if the person driving that car is listening, it is in their best interest to come forward as quickly as possible.”

The young woman is the 29th life lost on South Australian roads so far this year.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old driver is fighting for life in hospital after a car crashed into a heavy roller parked on the side of the road north of Adelaide.

The teen was flown to hospital in a critical condition after the crash on Haydon Rd at Kangaroo Flat, with emergency services alerted to the scene just before 7:20pm.
