The NEO has landed at Adelaide Airport in Jetstar expansion

Jetstar’s new Airbus A321neo has landed at Adelaide Airport as for direct flights to Bali start today, boosting capacity by 58,000 seats a year.

The NEO landed and with just 200 flying hours on the clock, Captain Jimmy Thomson says the aircraft he flew into Adelaide on Thursday still has “that new aircraft smell.”

Adelaide is now home to two of Jetstar’s new Airbus A321neo (NEO) with the first of regular Adelaide-Bali flights scheduled for takeoff at 6.20am on Friday.

Captain Thomson said the new aircraft is more fuel efficient, great to fly and much quieter than the Airbus A320 aircraft it replaces on the Indonesian holiday island route — “incredibly so.”

Cabin manager Zoe Sanders said passengers will appreciate the quieter flight, “noticeably on take off and landing”, as well as other touches such cabin lighting gently moving to a wake up setting of a morning.

“All seats have USB ports, there are two tray tables — one for food and the other for portable devices such as for watching a movie — and the overhead lockers are much bigger,” she said.

The NEOs will operate up to two direct flights a day between Adelaide and Bali and with up to 46 more seats per flight than the Airbus A320 will boost capacity by 58,000 seats a year, allowing more than 250,000 customers a year to fly between the destinations.

The first flight from Adelaide to Bali on the new aircraft takes off at 6.20am on Friday.

Jetstar says the aircraft is 50 per cent quieter than similar size Airbus A320/A321s, burns up to 20 per cent less fuel, has 232 wider seats each with USB power and seat back device holders and extra-large overhead storage bins with 40 per cent more space.

The Bali boost comes as Adelaide Airport pursues its ambitious Network Vision 2050 to have direct flights to about 40 cities by 2050.

Jetstar’s initial order of 18 NEOs is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Jetstar chief executive Stephanie Tully said a major investment in operations in Adelaide will it become the first city outside Melbourne and Sydney to be a permanent base for the A321neo.

“With these two NEOs calling Adelaide home, Jetstar is now the leading carrier between Adelaide and Bali and we’re incredibly grateful to Adelaide Airport for its ongoing support,” she said.
