Shots fired at home on Henderson Ave, Pooraka

An Adelaide street is in lockdown after gunfire shattered the early-morning quiet, leaving “freaked out” neighbours fearing for their safety.

The sound of a gunshot jolted residents awake in Pooraka, Adelaide’s north, before sunrise, with a bullet hole left behind in the front screen door of someone’s home.

Police have established a crime scene at a residence on Henderson Ave following reports of shots fired during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Neighbours say they were jolted awake by the sound of gunfire about 4.40am.

Across the road, Shahnaz Shafhi said she was asleep when the shot rang out.

“I heard a bang and then the sound of someone going down the road,” she said.

“I had no idea what it was until I came out later and saw all the police.”

Ms Shafhi said the young men living at the house involved had only recently moved into the neighbourhood.

“It is scary that it happened so close, our street is normally okay,” she said.

Another neighbour Chris Patterson said he also heard some talking out on the road but didn’t see who it was.

“It’s the first time in this street that that’s happened but yeah that’s the way things are now,” he said.

A few doors down, Adam said he also heard the gunshot as he was getting ready for work.

“I heard the shot but didn’t know what it was,” he said.

“The police came and knocked on our door about an hour later and asked to check the cameras but we didn’t get anything.”

He said he had lived on the street for almost 30 years.

“This street is a bit dodgy,” he said.

“That’s why we’ve got cameras. There’s been a home invasion nearby and a few other dramas. But at the house that was shot at this morning, those guys who live there are fairly new.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named for fear the perpetrators could return, said the shooting had left her family shaken and considering whether to move.

“I’ve got a daughter I have to think about, when she woke up this morning and found out this happened so close to home, she freaked out,” she said.

“This neighbourhood never used to have any problems. Most people owned their homes and were long-term residents, now they are being rented out and more and more new people are flooding in.”

Police are continuing to investigate.

They were called to the home after reports of gun shots heard outside the address, finding

a bullet hole on arrival.

It is understood the occupants were not injured.

Police do not believe this was a random incident and crime scene investigators will be at the scene on Thursday morning.

Police are appealing for any one with information that may assist to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

It comes after three people were arrested following an unrelated shooting at nearby Para Hills on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to Liberman Rd after reports of a group fighting in the street around 2:45pm.

Police cars blocked off Liberman Rd from the corner of Barcoo Rd, beside the Para Hills Uniting Church.
