Bikies and those caught making their own firearms are among the more than 100 South Australians banned from owning guns in the last year, police records show.

As police and the courts battle to control violent crime, the use of the Firearms Prohibition Order system has blown out to include 721 people, up from 613 just 12 months ago, and 577 the year before that.

Men continue to dominate the public list of those banned, with only 30 women named.

Around half of the people on the list are individuals that police say are involved in organised crime and pose a violent threat to the community.

People can also be deemed not a fit and proper person to possess a firearm because of gang association, without posing an immediate threat. They can also be banned if they have stored guns incorrectly, are subject of an intervention order or been found guilty of an offence involving threats of violence or fraud or deception for the purpose of obtaining a gun licence or permit.

Some of those on the list have been banned for many years, such as former bikie Vincenzo Focarelli, banned in 2012.

Lwal Lwal Diing was added in the past year. The alleged bikie was charged under the state’s strict anti-association gang laws after police say he was spotted talking to mates at a Prospect park. He has not been convicted of a crime, and in March asked the court for more time to prepare his case.

Douglas Bensch-Good, 30, was added to the list in the past 12 months after pleading guilty to making homemade firearms.

Comanchero bikie Daniel Abrahamson, 37, was included after pleading guilty to assault causing harm and fighting over an incident at the Cumberland Arms Hotel in 2021.

SAPOL firearms branch officer in charge Detective Superintendent Amit Sareen said; “There must be some level of elevated risk and aggravating circumstances before a FPO is issued.

“The public interest provision requires consideration as to whether the intrusion into private liberties are outweighed by the public interest in issuing a FPO.”

“The orders prohibit the ability of a person to possess firearms licence, acquire firearm or be present in a premises where firearms can be accessed.

“The orders are issued under the strict criteria of the Firearms Act 2015, and have been effective in ensuring that firearms do not come into the possession of a person causing risk of community safety.”

Detective Superintendent Sareen said the list did not include people who were deemed to be dangerous to themselves.
