Proposals to build multimillion-dollar sea pools at Port River, Hallett Cove

Authorities have narrowed down the spot for a multimillion-dollar tidal pool in Adelaide – but not all local residents are happy about the decision.

Adelaide is one step closer to getting the green light on its first tidal pool after planners narrowed down the location.

A study looking at three possible areas within the river has been completed, with the $3.29m Port River tidal pool now set for Cruickshank’s Corner.

The 50m pool with beach entry will have netting on three sides, a timber jetty and lap swimming as well as toilets, shade structures, change rooms and showers.

The proposal had been put forward by North Haven Surf Life Saving Club and Estuary Care Foundation (ECF).

The Costal Engineering Scoping Study for a Tidal Swimming Facility recommended the location after researching the best spots along the Port River.

In July, club president Glen Gallagher said the project would celebrate the fact the river was fit to swim in.

“There’s a lot of local interest in the Port River,” he said.

“It (the pool) allows people to get up close and personal with the South Australian waterways.”

On Wednesday, locals were quick to share their views after the new location was unveiled, with many deeming it a “stupid idea”.

Many shared their concerns over water quality, sharing on Facebook: “The water isn’t the best, I fish in there and wouldn’t eat what I catch”.

Another local referenced the spate of dolphin deaths in the area, and said: “You realise the dolphins are dying from something in the water and they don’t know what. But you want kids to swim in that water?”

The Port River plan is among two in Adelaide for seaside pools with Marion Council proposing a similar facility to be located at Heron Way Reserve in Hallett Cove.

The Hallett Cove pool idea was first floated in 2017.

Early in 2023, the City of Marion engaged a specialist team to develop a concept design for a proposed seaside pool at Hallett Cove.

Two options have been prepared for the council and community, which include a 50m seaside pool or a 25m seaside pool.

Both options come with a hefty bill with the 50m pool expected to cost an estimated $10.3m, while the 25m for $9m.

Council documents state, both options include a 90m length embankment protection behind the proposed pool.
