A seaside council area is expected to decide next week if they will make an existing New Year’s Eve dry zone permanent in a bid to make the area safer.

At a meeting on Tuesday, Holdfast Bay Council members will decide whether they will extend the Glenelg alcohol free zone to include Jetty Rd permanently.

A City of Holdfast Bay spokeswoman said the a decision will be made following the consideration of a report into the extension of the dry zone.

“A further update can be provided once the report has been considered by the elected members,” the spokeswoman said.

The extension would include Jetty Rd to the tram stop east of Brighton Rd and surrounding areas bounded by Augusta St South to High St.

The Holdfast Bay council area has three long-term regulated dry areas in operation at Glenelg, Brighton and Seacliff.

The current dry area at Glenelg includes, in addition to the beach, the area of land up to College Tce and Wigley Reserve.

SA Police approached council administration in October last year to request they consider a six-month period from the 2023/24 Spring to Summer period.

They said it would assist in policing alcohol-related problems and anti-social behaviour in the area.

It comes after a council motion to extend the dry zone was first revealed ahead of a scheduled meeting in February proposed by counsellor Bob Patton.

A Holdfast Bay council spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Patton withdrew the motion ahead of a scheduled council meeting but in its place a resolution was carried to produce the report into the matter.
