A regional medical centre is set to reopen less than a week after its abrupt closure that left patients shocked and confused.

The Murraylands Medical Centre (MMC) at Tailem Bend alerted patients to its closure on June 7, but after reaching a settlement, the centre will return to its normal operations as of 9am on Wednesday.

The closure of the MMC came one month after director of the practice, Dr Sanjeev Sabharwal received an eviction notice.

Dr Sabharwal said he and his wife first took over the MMC in 2018, when they leased the property from the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (RMCLHN), and said he was sent a rent bill for $54,000 in 2022, which he could not pay.

He said he attempted to “negotiate” a payment plan with the RMCLHN, but had not received a response to multiple emails and calls for assistance, before he received an eviction notice in May.

The removal of services from the region town left patients concerned as they would have had to travel to Murray Bridge – 25kms away – for the nearest GP.

The RMCLHN revealed in a public statement a settlement between the network and the MMC had been made and the business would remain in town.

“We will work to draw up a contract that will ensure the future of the service,” the statement said.

“We are very happy that it will remain open and able to continue caring for the Tailem Bend community.”

The centre currently operates on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, but the statement said the MMC was in the process of employing more doctors so operating days could be extended to five days a week.
