A multimillion-dollar community hub in Adelaide’s west is set to open its doors next February, with the local council announcing the official date.
The Henley Town Hall and the old library are currently under redevelopment to form a new community facility – Henley Ngutungka.
Charles Sturt Council says the hub will open on February 8 next year.
It will feature seven community activity spaces – including a community kitchen and meeting rooms, an upgraded Henley historical society office, undercover outdoor area and library resources.
The facility will be developed with carbon neutral concrete “to reduce the carbon impact of the building” and will be all electric with a 50KW solar panel system “to enable the site to generate renewable energy for reuse within the building”, council documents say.
Council said the facility “will nurture community groups across both the library and community centre sites”.
The $12m hub has been funded through the Federal Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant Program and council funds, which have partly come from asset sales.
Charles Sturt Council Mayor Angela Evans earlier said the facility has been designed to “meet the needs of both the present and the future”.
Its name – Ngutungka – is Kaurna for ‘place of knowledge’.
