A truck driver from Adelaide’s south has appeared in court for the first time charged over the deaths of two women in a horrific crash on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

A Victor Harbor truck driver who allegedly killed two Queensland women in a horrific crash in Adelaide’s south has fronted court for the first time.

Haydn Mark Jenkinson, 35, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Monday in front of Auxiliary Magistrate Clive Kitchin charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving and four counts of causing harm by dangerous driving.

He is yet to enter any pleas.

It’s alleged Mr Jenkinson was driving along Main South Rd in Wattle Flat last month when he collided with three vehicles and killed two Queensland women who were rear passengers in a silver Ford sedan. One, a 44-year-old, died at the scene while a 64-year-old died later in hospital.

Seven other people were injured in the crash, some of them critically, including a head chef at a popular Adelaide restaurant.

A 14-year-old male passenger was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The crash closed the main thoroughfare between Myponga and Yankalilla for several hours while Major Crash Unit detectives investigated the circumstances.

Normanville resident Gavin Schubert, 72, drove past the crash scene and described it as “horrific”. “It was like a bomb had gone off,” Mr Schubert said.

Mr Jenkinson, who was remanded on continuing bail, offered no comment as he left court on Monday accompanied by a supporter and his lawyer Casey Isaacs.

He will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in April next year.
