Terrifying footage has revealed a thug attacking a teenager at a gym and then the next day with a baseball bat, telling him he came to “break his legs”.
Lachlan Rhys Kelly, 21, Travis Levi Page, 20, – who helped facilitate the second attack – both avoided jail, after the victim was left with broken bones.
During sentencing, the District Court heard the men had become aware that Tyson Scott, who was Page’s former housemate, had allegedly mistreated his former girlfriend.
“Completely unknown to her, you then premeditated this offending, effectively to teach Mr Scott a lesson,” Judge Jane Schammer said.
“This was vigilante-type behaviour.”
The court heard Kelly went to Goodlife gym at Noarlunga on January 19, 2024 where the victim was in the change rooms.
The attack which was filmed and released to the Advertiser shows Kelly punching the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the floor, before stomping on him.
The court heard Kelly then arranged with Page to attend at the victim’s Christies Down home the next day.
Judge Schammer said Page’s knowledge of what was to happen was apparent from Snapchat videos where he said Kelly intended to bash the victim and outlined how he would facilitate it.
“Upon you both entering the premises, Mr Scott retreated into the backyard, where he was effectively pinned against the rear fence and completely defenceless,” Judge Schammer said.
The attack, which was filmed again, shows Kelly hitting Mr Scott with a baseball bat multiple times.
Mr Scott, who is now cowering on the ground, pleads with Kelly to stop, before he is told to get up.
“I’m hurting so f***ing bad c***, I cannot stand up,” he says.
Kelly then says “I came here to break your legs c***” before making Mr Scott kiss his shoe.
Mr Scott sought assistance from a stranger in a nearby house who drove him to hospital.
He sustained serious injuries, including a broken left tibia, a broken left forearm, an injury to his left knee and a dislocated right thumb which required surgery.
Kelly and Page pleaded guilty to causing harm with intent, while Kelly also pleaded guilty to assault.
In his victim impact statement, Mr Scott, who was only 18 at the time, said he was unable to start a roofing job for 11 months due to his injuries.
“He remains fearful and distrusting of others and rarely leaves the house,” Judge Schammer said.
Judge Schammer said the level of violence inflicted in the attacks on Mr Scott was concerning.
She sentenced Kelly to two years and three months jail, with a non-parole period of 14 months.
Due to his young age and lack of criminal history, the sentence was suspended on a $500 two year good behaviour bond.
Page was sentenced to one year and one month, with a non-parole period of seven months, which was suspended on a $500, 18 month good behaviour bond.
