A man charged over a stabbing at Prospect had his bail revoked after a court learned his proposed guarantor – his brother – had a “considerable” criminal history involving a “number of dishonesty offences”.

It comes after his former guarantor applied to be relieved of the responsibility.

SA Police then filed an application to revoke the 40-year-old’s bail on Thursday, with the prosecutors telling Port Adelaide Magistrates Court they saw a “lack of any incentive for the brother to actually report the breaches”.

Mr Yol’s defence told the court the offending was “aged” and that none of his sentences had resulted in imprisonment but rather good behaviour bonds, which he had completed successfully.

He said the defendant’s brother was working five days a week for a company at the Royal Australian Air Force base at Edinburgh.

“In my submission that’s not an insignificant position because obviously he had to receive a certain level of police check …,” he said.

Mr Yol is facing an attempted murder charge after police alleged he stabbed another man at his home in February.

The Prospect victim was rushed to hospital with “life-threatening injuries”.

Mr Yol, also of Prospect, handed himself in to the Holden Hill Police Station the day after the alleged incident.

At an earlier hearing, Kate Opolski, for Mr Yol, argued her client acted in self-defence after the “alleged victim came at (him) with a knife”.

Mr Yol was released on home detention bail in March but was forced to return to custody on Thursday after Magistrate Alison Adair granted SA Police’s application to revoke Mr Yol’s bail.

She said the court had to have faith in the guarantor.

“Given the history of the proposed guarantor, it’s a considerable criminal history involving, as I understand it, a number of dishonesty offences, including providing false information to authorities,” she said.

“I consider that Mr Yol, the defendant’s brother, is an unsuitable person to guarantee Mr Yol, the defendant’s bail.”

Mr Yol will return to court next month.
