Community’s outpouring of love for mystery woman killed in Toorak Garden crash
An eastern suburbs community has been left reeling after a familiar figure in their neighbourhood was killed in a crash.
An eastern suburbs community has been left heartbroken over the tragic death of a woman who was always seen walking around the neighbourhood.
An undeniable member of the Toorak Gardens community, the 69-year-old woman was struck dead by a car reversing out of a driveway on Saturday on Bolingbroke Grove.
A beautiful bunch of flowers was planted in honour of the woman, accompanied with a note pinned to a bench she would often rest on in the leafy suburb.
“This is in memory of an amazing woman who walked around Toorak Gardens every day, with a severe disability,” the note read.
“She was persistent in walking despite the weather and her courage was inspirational.
“Her smile was heartwarming. Her death is very sad and we will miss her.
“May she rest in peace, having given all who watched her, a lesson in strength, persistence and courage.”
Residents said the woman would often be seen walking with a cane or walker and had an unbalanced step.
It was understood that she did not speak English and people did not know her name.
One resident told The Advertiser each step she made was “a real struggle”.
“But she was out whether it was raining, very hot or walking with her cane and walker,” they said.
“We all knew her and we thought of her as an absolute inspiration.”
Major Crash Investigator attended the scene.
Following an investigation, a 72-year-old Toorak Gardens driver was charged with causing death by careless driving and was issued with an instant loss of licence until further order.
He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
The woman’s death is the 60th life lost on SA roads this year.
