A 69-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car in Toorak Gardens, 72-year-old man charged
A woman who was hit and killed by a car in Toorak Gardens has been remembered as an “absolute inspiration” by her community.
Emergency services are at a scene in Toorak Gardens where a 69-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car at the corner of Bolingbroke Grove, St Albans Ave and Leighton Walk.
The Advertiser understands that the woman died after being hit by a Toyota four-wheel drive, and the driver, a 72-year-old man from Toorak Gardens was uninjured.
The car is believed to have been reversing out of a driveway on Bolingbroke Grove, Toorak Gardens.
Residents in the area said the woman walks with a cane or sometimes a walker and has an unbalanced step.
They said she was well-known around the neighbourhood as a placid and friendly woman who was known to walk all over the suburb.
“She could barely walk at all. Every step was a real struggle. But she was always out whether it was raining, very hot, or walking with her cane and walker” one resident said.
“She never spoke to anybody, I tried one day and she just gave me a blank look, I think it was because she knew no English at all. But we all knew her and we thought of her as an absolute inspiration.”
Reverend Dr Matthew Anstey, priest at St Theodore’s Anglican Church in Toorak Gardens said that many people in the church admired the woman and that the entire community was saddened by her passing.
“Every day rain, hail or shine, she progressed ever so slowly, but resolutely with her walker. Despite our efforts we never learned her name or story. Yet she embodied perseverance, courage and fortitude and for that she will never be forgotten,” he said.
Major Crash Investigators attended to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and multiple crews have just left the scene, more than a half a dozen police vehicles remain.
Following an investigation, the driver was charged with causing death by careless driving and issued with an instant loss of licence until further order. He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
The woman’s death is the 60th life lost on SA roads this year.
Earlier this week, two men died on Kangaroo Island after their white Nissan utility rolled over.
The driver, a 42-year-old Hackham West man, survived with minor injuries but has since been arrested and charged with two counts of causing death by careless use of a motor vehicle.
