City-Bay 2025: Registrations are open for Adelaide’s biggest fun run

What do Captain America, Han Solo and Duffman from The Simpsons have in common? They, and their mates, all have a very emotional reason to be here.

When Stafford Wulff was diagnosed with pancreatic and bowel cancer in 2020, he decided to raise money and awareness for the charities that supported him.

So he and a few mates registered for some running events, including the virtual London marathon, True Grit Challenge and the Starlight Children’s Foundation Go Big Challenge.

They raised nearly $35,000 and had planned to continue the running tradition in the 2022 City-Bay fun run.

Tragically, Mr Wulff died a few months before that event, but his mates decided to continue their plans and run the City-Bay – but with a twist.

All self-confessed Marvel movie nerds, the group had dressed as their favourite super heroes for a party to mark the 12-month anniversary of Mr Wulff’s diagnosis.

And so after he died in April, 2022, they decided to celebrate his life by running the City-Bay wearing the same costumes.

They’ll be back this year doing the same, and friend Sam Driver said it was a fitting tribute to a man taken too soon at the age of just 40.

“He was the friendly face in the room that everyone knew,” Mr Driver said.

“It didn’t matter how big or small your day had been – he had time for everyone and made sure that he was always present. He went out of his way to ring you up.

“He just knew where your interests were and he was just ‘on’ with making sure that he was going to keep it up and keep the connections going.”

The 2025 City-Bay, supported by the Sunday Mail, is on September 21. Go to city-bay.org.au to register
