Adelaide boundary shake-up as Southwark becomes a suburb, boundaries change for Bolivar and Paralowie, more changes proposed for Port Noarlunga

A new suburb in the west, boundary changes in the north, and proposed shifts in the south are part of a major shake-up of suburban Adelaide. See the maps here.

The boundaries of suburban Adelaide will be shaken up on Thursday after the creation of a new suburb – Southwark – while the borders will be changed for Bolivar and Paralowie, and proposed changes will be announced for Noarlunga Downs and Port Noarlunga.

Southwark, in Adelaide’s inner west, is set to be the home of Renewal SA’s Southwark Grounds development, which will convert the former West End Brewery site into a community with more than 1300 new homes.

The publication of the government gazette on Thursday will mark Southwark’s birth as a suburb, along with official changes to the boundaries of Bolivar and Paralowie.

A patch formerly of Bolivar will be part of Paralowie, after a group of landholders pushed for the change in part because of Bolivar’s reputation for a sewage smell.

The request was made by Aspen Group’s Highway 1 Caravan & Tourist Park and a neighbouring property owner.

The government will also announce a process has started to enlarge Port Noarlunga to include a part of Noarlunga Downs.

The affected section sits between Dyson Rd to the west and a rail corridor, which forms part of Renewal SA’s 620-home Noarlunga development.

Planning Minister Nick Champion said the change would be a logical alternative to “having a neighbourhood diagonally dissected between Port Noarlunga and Noarlunga Downs”.

“This proposal would create a clear and logical boundary that will make sense to new residents,” he said.

The government said Southwark was the original name given to a private subdivision with similar boundaries in 1881, but Thebarton was later adopted as the suburb name.

The South Australian Property and Planning Atlas was set to be updated with the boundaries for Southwark and Paralowie on Thursday evening.

It’s not clear when the changes would appear on Google Maps and other open-source mapping systems. Google has been contacted for further information.
