In The Advertiser’s new mini series, reporter Natasha Emeck travels across the state to see just how deep the bloom’s grip has taken hold and speaks to experts in the field about the government’s response, what really caused the crisis and where we go from here.
Among those impacted is Pacific Estate Oysters’ Steve Bowley, whose business has been closed for 200 days as algae suffocates his oyster farm at Stansbury, on the Yorke Peninsula.
With millions of animals dead, hundreds of thousands in economic loss suffered already and billions of dollars more at risk across the state’s industries, the bloom is a challenge that demands our attention.
But it has also taught us is how precious our coastline is and how important it is to eat seafood, buy local and, above all, cherish our industries.
