POLICE have charged two people over two separate reckless-driving offences involving the theft of government cars.

Police on Wednesday intercepted a driver in a maroon-coloured Subaru station wagon after the driver, a 46-year-old male from West Moonah, was seen driving dangerously in a stolen government car.

The driver, whose license had been suspended, failed to stop for police, leading officers on a four-hour chase around Hobart’s Northern suburbs.

Police last night charged him with seven counts of stealing, five counts of burglary, three counts of driving while suspended, and one count of evading police.

In a separate incident, police have charged a 45-year-old-woman from Lenah Valley who was caught by police after driving dangerously in a stolen government car on Thursday.

A police spokesman said officers approached the stationary vehicle in Jackson St, Glenorchy, about 11.30am, in an attempt to arrest the occupants, but the car sped off; leaving a policewoman knocked to the ground by a car door.

Police yesterday charged the female driver with a series of offences including dangerous driving, evading police, motor vehicle stealing and aggravated assault.

Police are investigating whether the theft of the two cars from a New Town government facility were linked.

Both offenders were also charged for a number of computer fraud offences.

“These charges are the result of detectives and uniform police working together to target offenders and their activities,” Detective Acting Inspector Jim Semmens said.

“The investigation has been greatly assisted by members of the community who have provided specific information and dashcam footage. I would like to thank the community for their very valuable assistance.”

Both drivers have been detained in custody and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Friday morning.

Police will allege that the parties are known to each other and that while they were arrested separately, they were acting together for a number of the offences.
