A SOUTHERN Tasmanian man accused of a series of burglaries at homes in an area threatened by a bushfire has been denied bail.

Jeremy Alexander Godwin, 42, of Police Point in the Huon Valley, appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court today, charged with five counts of burglary, 10 counts of stealing, seven counts of aggravated burglary, 12 counts of trespass, two counts of attempted burglary, and one count each of unlawful possession of property and resisting police.

Mr Godwin is yet to enter a plea.

Police previously alleged that on Monday this week a thief targeted properties that had been evacuated by residents because of the Riveaux Rd bushfire that has been putting several Huon Valley towns at risk.

Police Point, southeast of Geeveston, is one area that has been under an emergency warning because of the fire.

The area is still subject to warnings, but on Thursday the alert level was downgraded from emergency to watch and act.

Magistrate Chris Webster remanded Mr Godwin in custody until his next appearance on February 25.
