A MAN brandishing a gun has threatened a woman during a “brazen and confronting” robbery at a bottle shop at Claremont, police say.
The man, who was armed with a shortened firearm, entered the Claremont Hotel 9-11 bottle shop on Main Rd about 7.20pm Friday.
He threatened a female staff member before leaving the scene on foot with an unknown amount of cash.
Glenorchy Detective Inspector Craig Joel this morning said no-one was injured during the incident.
“The man confronted a female assistant in the store, this is a really brazen and confronting crime,” he said.
“The staff member is very shaken and obviously the [bottle shop] is abiding by their protocols and counselling is being offered.
“These crimes have a real effect not only on the staff in the store, but people who use that store.”
The suspect was last seen on CCTV running on Cadbury Rd. He is described as about 180cm tall, with a medium build and short/shaved hair.
He was wearing a black long-sleeve top, black Hurley trackpants, black Nike running shoes and what appears to be a black homemade face covering.
He was reportedly carrying a white plastic bag with green handles.
Detective Inspector Joel said the man may have used a car but it has not yet been confirmed.
“The man acted alone, he’s gone into the bottle shop and demanded money and fled,” he said.
“At this stage, we’re unsure if he’s used a vehicle and that’s why we’re appealing for witnesses.
“It is possible the man has dropped the gun and bag, and residents in the nearby area to the bottle shop are asked to check their yards and report anything out of place to police.”
About 20 minutes before the armed robbery, a gun was discharged outside a house in the nearby suburb of Gagebrook.
There was no apparent damage to the house but the occupants of the Ashburton Rd property are known to police, Detective Inspector Joel said.
“There is no obvious evidence that this shooting and the Claremont robbery are connected, but police have not closed their minds to this,” he said.
It is thought the offender, who was not seen by witnesses, left in a small dark coloured car.
Investigations by Bridgewater CIB detectives into both matters are continuing.
