UPDATED: Tasmania Police have confirmed they were called to a Hobart nightclub after a partygoer was evicted for letting off pepper spray.
Police said they attended The Grand Poobah in Liverpool St following reports of a disturbance just after 4am.
“It was subsequently established that someone had deployed pepper spray within the premises before police arrival,” a statement said.
“Police spoke to a 53 year old man at the scene and seized a used can of ‘Pfefferspray’ branded spray.
“Advice was given to the venue in respect to treatment [and] cleaning of the affected area.”
Police said investigations were continuing.

EARLIER: A partygoer has been evicted from a Hobart nightclub after they let off pepper spray in the venue.
In a statement posted to Facebook this morning, Liverpool St venue The Grand Poobah said a patron let off a “decent amount” of pepper spray about 4am on Saturday.
“The Grand Poobah would like to unreservedly apologise to all patrons who were with us at around 4am this Saturday morning, and whom were affected by the event that took place,” the statement said.

“It was found that a patron had let off a decent amount of pepper spray into the venue.
“The patron was swiftly removed and police picked up the person in question.
“The Poobah strives to ensure that everyone has a great time when with us, and wish to reassure that an incident like this has never occurred previously.”
Tasmania Police said they had no details of the incident when contacted by the Mercury.
