A FORMER Hobart doctor accused of killing his elderly mother in Sandy Bay in March has been granted bail in the Tasmanian Supreme Court.

Stephen John Edwards, 61, of Woy Woy, NSW, appeared emotional as he walked from court flanked by supporters after being held in custody since his extradition to Tasmania in April.

Dr Edwards has pleaded not guilty to murdering 88-year-old Nelda Edwards.

He today offered a “no comment” to the waiting media as he made his way down Salamanca Place for a drink with his supporters.

Justice Stephen Estcourt ordered Dr Edwards to reappear in the Supreme Court on August 29.
