A FORMER Dominic College teacher and ex-Catholic priest will be brought to Tasmania to face a number of historic indecent assault allegations.

Former Salesian order priest David Edwin Rapson, who taught at the Glenorchy school during the 1980s, has been charged with six counts of indecent assault.

The 66-year-old was due to face the Supreme Court of Tasmania yesterday for a directions hearing, but is serving a “long sentence” in a Victorian prison for other matters.

Defence barrister Kim Baumeler said she last spoke to Mr Rapson on the phone “about a year ago”, but had been unable to communicate with him since he’d been moved to a different Victorian prison.

“I have jumped through hoops to access my client but I have failed,” she said.

She told Chief Justice Alan Blow the allegations were historic and dated back to “when he was a minister at a school”.

The court was told material from Tasmania Police was “voluminous”. The matter will return to court on March 23.
