A HOBART couple is reeling after their business was destroyed when a stolen car was torched at the back of their bakery.
Jaycob and Elspeth Barry received the bad news about their Claremont bakery on Sunday morning.
“At 5am we got a call from the police to say someone had stolen a car and set it on fire,” Mrs Barry said.
“It rolled into the back of our bakery and set our bakery on fire.
“We are now unable to operate for what looks like the next four weeks. We are absolutely devastated.”
It was the third car that had been stolen and then set alight at the rear of their bakery since the Barrys bought the business.
Adding insult to injury, the couple are unlikely to ever learn who was responsible or see them brought to justice.
“We are young, newly married, trying to make a go of it and due to this we are now unable to operate our business and our livelihood,” Mrs Barry said.
“Police have told us that they are unlikely to find out who it is, and it’s such a common thing now.
“When will there be real consequences for people doing this?”
Mrs Barry said the bakery was without power and gas.
The couple are unable to use the premises due to fire and smoke damage and it will be closed until further notice.
They thanked their family for support.
“Can’t thank you enough,” she said.
