POLICE have released a fresh warning about the use of illegal laser pointers in public after someone allegedly targeted a plane arriving at Hobart International Airport.
A Tasmania Police spokesman said they received reports of someone shining a laser pointer at an incoming aircraft about 7.30pm on Tuesday.
“The laser pointer was believed to be in the Dodges Ferry area,” he said.
“Police monitored the Dodges Ferry area for some time but there were no further sightings.
“Police would like to reinforce that it is an offence to possess, carry or use a laser pointer in a public place without a lawful excuse.”
Pilot and managing director of Par Avion Tasmania Shannon Wells labelled the act a “real safety issue”.
“The laser can shine into the pilot’s eyes and temporarily blind them,” he said.
“It’s like driving towards a car with its high beam headlights on. It’s probably not likely to cause any permanent damage but it could affect a pilot’s vision and be a real safety issue.”
The maximum penalty for a laser pointer offence is a $3260 fine.
